Dr. Roman Cech currently holds the position of Professor of Economics at Florida State College at Jacksonville. He received his economics education in Europe and in the United States.
After graduating from the Economics University in Bratislava, Slovakia in 1987, Dr. Cech was an assistant professor of economics there for four years. In 1991, he received a Fulbright fellowship and spent one year as a visiting professor at the University of Virginia. After that Fulbright year, he stayed at UVA as a graduate student and instructor of economics. At UVA, Dr. Cech earned his MA in 1995 and PhD in 2001.
In 2002-2003, Dr. Cech worked as an economist at the Institute for East-European Studies in Munich, Germany, where he was involved in government consulting in former communist countries of Eastern Europe. He advised top officials of the government of Ukraine on tax and social security reform. In 2003, Dr. Cech returned to the United States andheld positions at universities in Virginia and Florida.
Dr. Cech is a founder of the Slovakia Scholars Program, a year-long seminar about the history, economy, politics and culture of Central and Eastern Europe. The seminar is followed by a ten-day trip to Slovakia, Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary. The program opened the opportunity to travel for excellent students who could not afford more standard and costly study abroad programs.
Dr. Cech’s scholarship includes a variety of intellectual contributions. It spans theoretical and pedagogical research, as well as collaboration with industry and advising on economic reform. Thanks to his ability to explain complex issues in an understandable and concise way, Dr. Cech’s speeches have been in great demand. He has given presentations on the state of the US and global economy to a number of credit unions and credit union industry associations. Dr. Cech also contributes Quarterly Macroeconomic Reports on the US and European economies for the Corporate Executive Board, a Washington, DC based consulting firm.
